Mesut Kurtis was born in Skopje in 1981 to a Turkish-Macedonian family, and came to the United Kingdom as a young man to study Human Sciences, Islamic Law and Jurisprudence at the European Institute of Human Sciences, University of Wales. He signed to Awakening Music in his early twenties and released his first album, Salawat, in 2004. His rendition of the classical Qasidah Al-Burdah — filmed among the islands off the Turkish coast — became the record most listeners know him by. Across five albums, an EP and a steady stream of devotional singles, he records in Arabic, Turkish, English and Albanian, and has sung for audiences from London’s Apollo to festival crowds of fifty thousand.
